The Salkantay Trek is the premier alternative when Inca Trail permits are sold out. Circle the sacred Apu Salkantay, cross a 4,650 m pass between glacier and jungle, and descend through coffee country to reach Machu Picchu.
Day one includes a side trip to the turquoise Humantay Lake. Nights alternate between mountain lodges and jungle camps, with mules carrying your gear. The final morning brings a sunrise visit to the citadel.

Day 1
Drive to Challacancha and hike to Soraypampa (3,900 m). Side trip to Humantay Lake (4,200 m). Dinner and camp at Soraypampa. Approx. 8 km.

Early start for the ascent to Salkantay Pass (4,650 m) with views of Salkantay and Humantay peaks. Long descent through cloud forest to Chaullay. Approx. 21 km, 8 hours.

Day 3
Trek through the high jungle to La Playa (2,000 m), then transport to Hidroeléctrica and walk to Aguas Calientes. Hotel overnight. Approx. 5 hours hiking.

Day 4
Pre-dawn bus to Machu Picchu for a guided tour. Return to Aguas Calientes, then train to Ollantaytambo and transfer to Cusco.
